Draw Out My Nostalgia
Let's color with every crayon in the box, and outside the lines.
Good Ol’ Tom & Jerry!
I remember watching them on Cartoon Network. Tom, chasing Jerry across the screen, causing the most absurd mischief. I could’ve sat there and watched them forever.
They must’ve been rattling around in the back of my mind somewhere because I decided to sketch them out. With a pen, no less. I’m rusty, so I started drawing some big ears when I realized I wouldn’t have the space. Eyeballing the reference image and my page, back and forth, I managed to draw these two together.
I drew one shape after the other until the picture started to appear. It’s like with anything, you do it one step at a time. Or, like my sister likes to say,
“How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.”
It turned out perfectly imperfect, and that’s what I like about it.
Also, if you’re wondering why it’s on lined paper—good question! I left my paint, sketch pad, and easel at my ex-boyfriend’s house. I’m pretty sure his kids ended up using them, and I figured I could always get more. (Have a good life!)
I’ve always described myself as “artsy fartsy,” and I think that still holds true. I’m excited for Substack. I actually can’t believe it took me this long to get on board.
Check back often, I plan to post more of my art and other art I find inspiring.
